Niner News - Winter 2009

July 2010

Welcome to the seventh issue of Niner News!

There has been a dramatic change in the appearance of our construction site in the past few weeks – due to the Tilt-Up Concrete construction method -- we went from having no walls on the winery to all the walls in a very short span of time. On the other two buildings, we are using Insulated Concrete Form construction, so the progress is not as dramatic, but advancing on schedule.

Heart Hill and Bootjack Ranch Updates

Heart Hill and Bootjack Ranch Updates

The first 20 acres of Heart Hill, planted spring 2007, are weathering the winter. We added a Shur Farms Selective Inverted Sink (SIS) machine to the Grenache blanc block for frost protection. We are currently planning for the next phase of planting.

At Bootjack, we had pretty serious shatter (when a large percentage of grape flowers do not become grape berries) in all the Bordeaux varieties in the 2008 growing season. The shatter was a consequence of weather conditions between flowering and set and resulted in a reduced crop at harvest time. The fruit was great – we just wished we had more of it!

We are hoping for a lot more rain – if you know a good rain dance, please dance for us!
